How to clean a car engine

Cleaning a car engine is not difficult - it just requires a little elbow grease.

Step 1: Prepare the engine for cleaning

Try to remove any debris that may be caught in your grill, hood, or vents. If you have access to compressed air, the job will be done quickly; if you do not have easy access, not so much. All you need to do the job is a small hand brush. After you have removed the dirt, it's time to prepare the engine for getting wet. Cover sensors, exposed wires, the distributor and spark plug holes. Plastic bags work well for this task and only need a little tape or rubber bands to stay in place. The point is not to waterproof the engine, you just want to prevent most of the water from getting into these parts. Your engine is most likely waterproofed from the factory - the bags are an added precaution.

Step 2: Loosen accumulated grease

This is an effortless step! Start your car and let it run for 5-10 minutes. This will loosen the accumulated grease and oil and other things that have built up in the engine. Also, a warm engine works well with degreasing products.

Step 3: Apply engine degreaser

Be sure to purchase a water- or citrus-based cleaner. Petroleum-based products work quickly, but they are also aggressive and will attack rubber hoses and seals. Apply the degreaser from the bottom up so that the degreaser does not drip down on you while you are cleaning the engine. Also, keep in mind that wax will be removed from your fenders if you spray the degreaser on too much. Cover them or spray very carefully so you do not have to re-wax. After you have applied the degreaser, hose off your fenders if they were not protected. Other areas that need to be sprayed down are the hood and grille.

If your car engine is clean, leave the degreaser on for about three minutes. If your engine is very dirty, you will need five minutes for the degreaser to loosen everything. For moderate to light buildup, you do not need to use a hand brush. For heavy deposits, use a spare parts brush (with a long handle) so you can easily reach all parts of the engine. When using the brush, use a little car wash so that the motion of the brush helps a little to remove heavy debris before hosing down the engine.

Step 4: How to wash a car engine

Once the degreaser time is up, you need to hose it down. It's best not to use a high-pressure nozzle, as it can damage the electrical connections even if you have them covered. A regular garden hose with an adjustable nozzle set to "stream" works well.

Step 5: Drying the motor

The heat from your engine will help it dry quickly. Never let your engine air dry if it gets stained. Instead, wipe the engine with a clean microfiber cloth after a few minutes.

Tip - After you have dried your engine, spray it with a brand-name engine cleaner. Wipe off the excess protectant and polish it to a high shine.
